Darren Frearson

Vice President of Sales, EMEA-APAC

Darren Frearson serves as Vice President of Sales, EMEA-APAC for GatesAir. Born and educated in the UK, Darren calls on more than 30 years of experience in the broadcast industry to lead a large and experienced team of sales professionals servicing Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the entire Asia-Pacific region.

After starting his career in the UK in professional recording studios, Darren progressed to audio post-production for television where his achievements were recognised and honored by the “Distinguished Engineers Audio Federation” of Great Britain. Darren continued to develop his technical skills in specialised broadcast areas working with the BBC on the first digital audio Television/Radio simulcast, and lecturing at Cambridge University on the applications of SMPTE and AES/EBU time-code. 

Frearson was recruited to Australia in 1989 as a broadcast engineer, expanding his skills and experience to include broadcast transmission, point-to-point microwave and satellite communications. Frearson has held senior positions with Comsyst Pty Ltd (now part of United Group Limited), BSA Ltd, Broadcast Australia, The Bridge Networks, Broadcast One, and Gencom Technology.

Frearson's key achievements include involvement in Australia’s first commercial broadcast DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) system and the first Australian high power DTTV (Digital Terrestrial Television) commercial broadcast. Frearson also initiated the world's first high-power trial for an experimental hand-held television service in association with Telstra, Foxtel and the Nine Network Australia.
